Circus Arts Biography

The Beginnings:

With a brief background in gymnastics, I discovered love for circus at the collegiate club, Cirque du K, at Kalamazoo College. After being an extern for Aerial Angels in Summer 2008, I helped bring aerials to the club working alongside college staff and lawyers to develop a program. Since then, I've enjoyed coaching with Starfish Circus and performing with Aerial Angels as a company member. I've also taught and performed with the Detroit Flyhouse in Detroit, MI and at Astuces Children's Circus School in Chamalieres, France. I have training from the New England Center for Circus Arts in Trapeze and Fabric, and have completed Ring One of CircusYoga Teacher training.

With Cirque du K at Kalamazoo College, I started a youth development through circus arts program in the Kalamazoo community called "Circus in the 'Zoo" and developed and taught the first PE course at Kalamazoo College in circus arts in Spring 2011, currently being taught by a later member of the club. I've interned with PAL Sailor Circus in Sarasota, FL (now, Circus Sarasota) in 2010. I am an active member in the American Youth Circus Organization, and have worked as an intern, member, and festival presenter since 2011.

Recently:

I most recently worked full-time in the summer of 2013 as the educational outreach coordinator and aerial instructor at a social circus in St. Louis, Circus Harmony. Circus Harmony is a youth social circus that teaches the art of life through circus skills, community building, and character development. "Peace through Pyramids, Harmony through Handstands!" I loved my time there and am committed to making frequent visits and guest teaching appearances, reuniting with my St. Louis family.

During the 2014-2015 years I took on a leadership volunteer position with the organization CircusNow as a webinar manager where I helped to organize relevant and substantive talks and interactions around the changing nature of contemporary circus.

Current Projects:

Though I'm now teaching French full time in Ann Arbor, MI, I've become highly involved in the AcroYoga Community here. I have participated in many workshops, immersions, classes, jams and demonstrations. I look forward to completing my own AYfit certification (Acro Yoga Fitness Instruction) in the spring of 2016 so I may bring this amazing athletic and connecting art to my other areas of life.

I am passionate about the capacity of circus arts to tell stories, to connect people, and to engage youth and adults in non-competitive artistic physical activity. I look forward to her future adventures in circus, knowing it will always remain a part of my life forever!

I perform a variety of skills including:

  • aerial arts (fabric, trapeze, lyra)

  • partner acrobatics

  • handstand contortion

  • hula hooping

  • competitive cheer stunting
